Calvert Crusade for Children

Question 1:  What role should the office you seek play in the lives of children and  families?

My budget votes reflect my priorities as a Commissioner.  I have advocated for and voted for funding for children’s programs, often in a 4 to 1 vote.  I led on the matching capital funding for the Bayside Boys and Girls Club.  I fought for a modern, energy-efficient indoor aquatic center before and after I was elected for 10 years, with success on 8/ 8/06.  The new library, Cove Point pool, Solomons Park demonstrate results

Question 2:  What are the most critical issues facing Calvert County families in the next three to five years, and how should these issues be addressed within the office you seek?

Many issues face families including:  rising costs for gas, utilities, housing, home assessments, child care and health insurance; high stakes testing for high school graduation; long commutes leaving less time for family and community; and traffic.  While local government alone can not solve all problems, Commissioners can lead in the search for solutions and can form alliances with various groups to help.  Virtually every vote I make is an opportunity for advocacy for families.
